The Truckee River whitewater park runs straight through downtown, and tubing it in July is a local ritual.
Lake Tahoe is 45 minutes away, which makes Reno the cheapest base for the lake in summer and for skiing in winter.
Virginia City, a preserved silver rush town, is a 40 minute drive and an easy half day.
The mountain passes to Tahoe and California need snow tyres or chains from November to April. Rentals do not always include them.
