Madeira roads are steep with hairpins and tunnels. Take the smallest car you can and check that hill starts are comfortable.

The Monte cable car up and the wicker toboggan down is the classic combination. The toboggan ends short of town, so budget a taxi or bus back.

Weather is highly local. Funchal can be sunny while the north coast is in cloud, so flip your plan rather than cancel it.

The aerobus and public buses take about 30 minutes, and a taxi is roughly 20 to 25 minutes.

Five to seven days lets you mix Funchal, two or three levada walks, the Pico do Arieiro ridge and the north coast.
