Distances are continental. Domestic flights are usually cheaper than long drives once fuel and hotels are counted.

You can drive on most foreign licences for short visits, but rental companies may ask for an International Driving Permit alongside it.

Rules change at state lines, from alcohol and cannabis laws to speed limits and sales tax. Check locally rather than assuming.

Tipping is expected rather than optional. Budget 18 to 20 percent for table service, a couple of dollars a drink at a bar, and 15 to 20 percent for taxis.

Prices on shelves and menus exclude sales tax, which is added at the till and varies by state and city.
