The Leonardo Express runs from Fiumicino to Termini in 32 minutes. Ciampino is served by coach in about 40 minutes.

Rome has only three metro lines. Buses fill the gaps and walking is often faster in the centre.

Public drinking fountains, the nasoni, run cold and safe all over the city. Carry a bottle rather than buying water.

Eat in Testaccio or Trastevere's back streets. Anything with a picture menu near a monument is a tourist trap.

Vatican without the crush

Book the first entry of the day or a late Friday opening. Walk straight to the Sistine Chapel first, then double back through the galleries.

Eat where Romans eat

Testaccio market at lunch, then dinner in the streets behind Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. Avoid anything with a menu photo.
