Local buses radiate from Fira. Getting between two villages usually means changing there.

Oia sunset draws thousands. The castle viewpoint fills 90 minutes early, and Imerovigli gives the same view with room to stand.

Cruise days put several thousand extra people in Fira and Oia. Check the port schedule and plan a beach or winery day instead.

Most tap water is desalinated. Locals drink bottled and so should you.

The caldera path from Fira to Oia takes about three hours. Walk it early, carry water and wear real shoes.

## Local knowledge

Contributed by guides, operators and creators on the ground. Community advice, kept separate from official sources.

Watch the Oia sunset from Imerovigli

Same caldera, same light, without the crowd on the castle steps. Walk back along the ridge path afterwards.

## Frequently asked questions

Direct flights in summer, domestic flights from Athens year round, and ferries from Piraeus taking five to eight hours.

Three days covers the caldera villages, a boat trip to the volcano and hot springs, and a wine tasting or beach day.

Fira for transport and nightlife, Imerovigli or Oia for caldera views at a premium, Kamari or Perissa for beaches and lower prices.

In July and August the caldera villages are extremely busy. May, June, late September and October are far more comfortable.
