Tram line 2 runs from the airport to the port in under 30 minutes for a flat fare.

The coastal TER train reaches Monaco in 20 minutes, Menton in 35 and Cannes in 30. Cheaper and faster than driving.

Nice beaches are pebble, not sand. Water shoes are worth the five euros.

Do not hire a car for the coast. Parking is brutal and the corniche roads jam in summer.

## Local knowledge

Riviera on a train ticket

Buy a day return to Menton and hop off at Villefranche, Eze-sur-Mer and Monaco on the way back. One of the best coastal rides in Europe.

Local guide

Where locals swim

Head east past the port to Coco Beach. Rocky, free, and the water is clearer than anything off the Promenade.
