> A practical Instagram Map checklist for tour operators covering place-tagged Reels, meeting points, permissions, guest privacy, creator briefs and attribution.

Tourpublish is the publishing layer above your reservation system, not a reservation platform. Every tour operator should be able to publish everywhere from one place.

[Back to blog](https://tourpublish.com/blog)

Instagram Map gives tour and activity operators another reason to manage place information carefully. It can help people encounter Reels, posts, Stories and Notes connected to a location, while its separate location-sharing feature lets users share their last active location with chosen friends.

Those are two different functions. Operators should use place-tagged content for discovery. They should not ask staff, creators or guests to broadcast their live or recent location.

## What is available now

**Verified on 28 August 2026:** Meta launched Instagram Map in the United States in August 2025 and announced its rollout in India in October 2025. We found no primary Meta announcement confirming a complete worldwide rollout. Availability can therefore vary by country, account, age, app version and rollout status.

Before building a campaign around it, open Instagram on the account you intend to use and check whether Map appears at the top of the direct-message inbox. Test the same process on both iOS and Android if they matter to your guests.

Meta describes three relevant capabilities:

- **Map discovery:** people can explore location-based content shared by friends and creators.

- **Place-tagged content:** Reels, posts, Stories and Notes carrying a location tag may appear on the Map for a limited period. Placement is not guaranteed.

- **Optional location sharing:** a user can choose to share their last active location with selected friends. Meta says this is off unless the user opts in, and it can be switched off at any time.

A place tag is not permission to track someone. Adding a named attraction or neighbourhood to a Reel is also different from enabling device-based location sharing.

## The operator checklist

### 1. Create a location inventory

List every place a guest may search for or recognise:

- departure points;

- meeting places and check-in desks;

- attractions visited;

- neighbourhoods, districts and nearby landmarks;

- arrival points, where different from departure points;

- seasonal or temporary meeting places.

For each one, record:

- the exact public-facing name;

- the Instagram location tag currently available;

- the street address or safe meeting description;

- a Google Maps or Apple Maps link for operational directions;

- the relevant tour or activity;

- whether the place is safe to identify publicly;

- the person responsible for checking it quarterly.

Do not create public content around private homes, staff-only entrances, wildlife nesting sites, vulnerable heritage locations or access points that could create crowding or trespass.

### 2. Test the customer’s search language

Search Instagram using the words a visitor would use, not only the operator’s internal name. Check:

- the official attraction name;

- common abbreviations;

- the neighbourhood and city;

- the nearest well-known landmark;

- local-language and English versions;

- common misspellings.

Choose one canonical place tag for each location and use it consistently. If several similar tags exist, select the one that most accurately matches the public meeting point. Never use a more popular but inaccurate tag simply to gain reach.

### 3. Make each departure point recognisable

Create at least one short, evergreen Reel for every main departure point. It should show:

- the approach from a safe, public landmark;

- the exact sign, doorway, pier, vehicle or guide uniform to look for;

- the neighbourhood name in on-screen text;

- the normal arrival time before departure;

- an instruction to use the booking confirmation for final directions;

- the correct place tag.

Pin the Reel to the operator profile and link it from the pre-arrival email or booking confirmation. If a meeting point changes, archive or update the old content promptly.

Avoid filming a complete security route, access code, guest list, ticket barcode or vehicle registration number.

### 4. Give attractions and neighbourhoods their own content

Do not tag only the departure point. Build a small content set around the places that make the experience desirable:

- one Reel explaining why the neighbourhood matters;

- one Reel featuring the attraction or viewpoint;

- one practical Reel covering arrival, terrain, clothing or accessibility;

- one seasonal Reel showing what changes during the year.

Use the most specific accurate place tag. Add the city or neighbourhood naturally in the caption and on-screen text. Tag the attraction’s official Instagram account where relevant, but do not imply a partnership unless one exists.

### 5. Set permissions before filming

Use a simple consent process for staff, creators and guests.

**For guests:**

- obtain clear consent before making anyone identifiable;

- provide a genuine way to decline without affecting their experience;

- obtain specific guardian consent for minors;

- use group-wide verbal notice only as an additional warning, not as a substitute for individual consent where faces are identifiable;

- record consent in a consistent place accessible to the operating team;

- explain where the content may appear and how to request removal.

**For staff and guides:**

- include content participation in a written policy or release;

- do not assume employment equals consent for promotional use;

- agree whether names, personal accounts and voices may be used;

- allow staff to opt out of location-sharing requests.

**For creators:**

- use a written brief and usage agreement;

- define channels, duration, editing rights and paid usage separately;

- require disclosure of gifted or paid experiences under the applicable advertising rules;

- prohibit live sharing where it creates a safety or privacy risk.

### 6. Protect guest privacy and operational security

Adopt these default rules:

- publish after the group has left, not while guests are assembled;

- never ask anyone to enable Instagram’s friend location sharing;

- do not reveal a guest’s hotel, home, room, onward route or current itinerary;

- do not show booking references, passenger lists, tickets, QR codes or payment screens;

- blur or exclude non-consenting guests and minors;

- avoid filming licence plates and private access controls;

- delay posts involving remote routes, small groups or high-value equipment;

- remove precise tags from sensitive natural or cultural sites where exposure could cause harm.

Location sharing is the user’s choice. An operator can ask for a place tag on agreed content, but should never make device-level location sharing a condition of joining, receiving photos or entering a competition.

## Creator briefing language to copy

>

Please create one vertical Reel that makes **[experience name]** easier to discover and attend. Use the Instagram place tag **[exact approved place]**, mention **[neighbourhood, city]** in the caption and show the public meeting landmark **[landmark]**. Tag **[@operator]** and use the supplied tracked booking link. Publish only after the group has left. Do not enable or request live location sharing. Do not show non-consenting guests, identifiable minors, booking details, access codes, vehicle registrations, private routes or sensitive sites. Please describe the experience accurately and disclose **[paid partnership/gifted experience]** as required. End with: “For dates and meeting details, use the link from [@operator].”

Add a shot list rather than a rigid script. Useful shots include the public approach, meeting sign, guide greeting, recognisable neighbourhood detail, one experience highlight and a clear closing instruction.

## Attribute map-driven enquiries without discount codes

Instagram does not provide operators with a clean report proving that a booking came from a Map view. Treat attribution as a combination of signals rather than a single exact number.

### Use distinct tracked links

Create a dedicated non-discount URL for each important place or creator, for example:

`example.com/tours/harbour-walk?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=organic_social&utm_campaign=instagram_map&utm_content=harbour_meeting_point`

Use the link in the creator’s bio, a Story link sticker, a DM reply or a landing page linked from the operator profile. Keep the offer and price identical to other direct channels.

### Add a booking-source question

Include an optional question during or immediately after booking:

**Where did you first find this experience?**

- Instagram Map or a place page;

- Instagram Reel, Story or post;

- an Instagram creator;

- Instagram search;

- Google;

- recommendation;

- other.

Follow with an optional free-text field: **Which place, account or post helped you decide?**

Do not force an answer before payment if it adds friction. A post-booking confirmation page or email can work better.

### Give each location a distinct enquiry route

Without changing the price, use:

- a location-specific landing page;

- a unique UTM parameter;

- a creator-specific booking link;

- a pre-filled WhatsApp or Messenger link containing the place name;

- a DM prompt such as “Send HARBOUR for meeting details”;

- a dedicated enquiry form with the location stored in a hidden field.

A keyword is an attribution label, not a discount code. Keep it descriptive and easy to spell.

### Record enquiry evidence

Ask staff to select a source when they create a manual booking or answer an enquiry. Suggested fields are:

- first-touch source;

- Instagram surface, such as Map, Reel, Story, search or creator;

- place tag or neighbourhood;

- creator account;

- landing-page URL and UTM values;

- enquiry date;

- booking date and value.

Review assisted conversions as well as last-click bookings. Someone may discover the operator through a place-tagged Reel, return through Google and book several days later.

## A 30-minute monthly review

Once a month:

- Confirm that every approved place tag still exists and points to the right location.

- Check that pinned meeting-point Reels remain accurate.

- Replace outdated seasonal information.

- Review tracked-link visits, DMs, source answers and bookings by location.

- Ask guides which meeting points still confuse guests.

- Remove content that exposes guests or sensitive access information.

- Brief upcoming creators using the approved wording.

- Test Map availability on the operator’s account before promising it in a campaign.

## What success looks like

The objective is not to make guests share where they are. It is to make the operator’s public places easier to understand and the experience easier to book.

A useful programme should produce fewer meeting-point questions, more visits to location-specific pages, more enquiries naming an attraction or neighbourhood, and a measurable increase in bookings assisted by Instagram. Start with the three locations responsible for the most departures or guest confusion, then expand only after the tracking and privacy process works.

Feature availability and interface details can change. Operators should check the current Instagram app and local privacy and advertising requirements before each campaign.
